THE SIMAVI NETHERLANDS SUPPORTS CHILD SURVIVAL PROJECT
IN THE AJUMAKO ENYAN ESSIAM DISTRICT
Hope for Future Generations with financial Support from SIMAVI Netherlands is currently implementing a two (2) year child survival project in the Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam District of the Central Region.
The project entitled “Improving the Health Status of Women and Children in the Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam District is being implemented in twelve rural communities in the district. This is a community based health promotion project in partnership with Ghana Health Service and the district assembly.
The capacity of community based volunteers are built to manage basic health and to educate community members on health issues. Ghana health service at district and sub district levels are giving technical support to the project.
Goal
The goal of the project is to promote and maintain the optimal growth and development of children under five years and improve the general health of women and girls in reproductive age by strengthening a responsive sustainable community managed primary health care services which encourage changes in health related behaviours and attitudes.
Objectives
1. To promote the survival of children under five years by making basic health care accessible, affordable and acceptable to women and children in 12 rural communities.
2. To contribute to the reduction of maternal and infant mortality and morbidity in the project communities.
3. To promote maternal Health including safe motherhood services (antenatal, delivery, postnatal and family planning) and adequate nutrition among women and children.
4. To make available reproductive health information in communities including HIV/AIDS and other STIs.
The following activities have been carried out:-
Community Entry, Mobilisation and Sensitisation:
In this activity there was interaction with community leaders and members to introduce the project to them and rally their support and ownership for project sustainability.

Baseline study
This study was to assess the knowledge, attitude and practice of women in fertility age group and mothers with children under five years of age on maternal and child health. The baseline study report will be used as yard stick in assessing impact of the project at the end of the implementation period.

Project start-up workshop
A one day start up workshop was held to give participants an overview of the project, focusing on strategies and anticipated results. Participants were from Ghana Health Service, District Assembly, Ghana Education Service, Department of Social Welfare and the Traditional leaders. The workshop was also to discuss the roles and responsibilities of stakeholders in the implementation of the project.
