Paloma Hotel, Accra – 14th August 2018

The Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG) has organised a meeting to disseminate and discuss major sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) issues that came up during the 51st session of the Commission on Population and Development (CPD) and the recently held High Level Political Forum in New York. The 51st CPD took place from 9th to 13th April 2018 while the HLPF was held from 8th – 19th July 2018.

Major Highlights from Presentations

Archibald Adams, Head of Advocacy at PPAG, presented on:

  • Highlights from the CPD and HLPF
  • Global and national opportunities for advocacy
  • Building healthy relationships with journalists for development

He shared with CSOs the benefits of getting spaces on international advocacy platforms such as the CPD, Commission on the Status of Women meetings, International Conference on AIDS and STIs in Africa (ICASA), AU Girls’ Summit and the World Health Assembly. These spaces are important in ensuring that we have a common forum for norm diffusion and sharing of experiences and best practices. Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) were also oriented by Dr. Leticia Adelaide Appiah, Executive Director of the National Population Council, on the current issues in the population and SRHR sector. It is expected that this information will help influence the advocacy work plans of CSOs to contribute to the needed change in the SRHR sector. The Executive Director of PPAG, Abena Adubea Acheampong, encouraged CSOs to prepare to engage and be strategic in their engagements on international and national advocacy platforms while focusing on advocating for a proper management of the population. CSOs at the meeting agreed that it is important to be consistent in their efforts and build strong relationships, not only with journalists, but with relevant stakeholders.
